Converting JPG to Text — What You Should Know

JPG is the format most OCR work starts from, because it's what phone cameras and scanners produce — and it's also the format that causes the most avoidable accuracy loss. JPEG compression works by discarding fine detail, and the detail it discards first is exactly the high-contrast edge between dark text and a light background. That produces faint ringing around letters, which is why a JPG saved at low quality extracts measurably worse than the same page saved as PNG. If you control the capture, save at the highest quality setting available; if you're re-saving an image, avoid opening and re-saving a JPG repeatedly, since each save compounds the damage.

JPG to Text — Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my JPG extract worse than a PNG of the same page?▼

JPEG compression discards fine detail, and it targets high-contrast edges first — precisely the boundary between text and background. That creates faint ringing around letters which degrades recognition. PNG is lossless and so preserves those edges intact.

Does re-saving a JPG make OCR worse?▼

Yes. Each save re-applies lossy compression, so repeatedly opening and re-saving a JPG progressively degrades the letter edges. Work from the original capture whenever you can.

What's the maximum JPG size I can upload?▼

5 MB. If your file is larger, reduce the dimensions rather than lowering the JPEG quality — resolution helps recognition while quality reduction hurts it.
