Converting WebP to Text — What You Should Know

WebP is what you get when you save an image from most modern websites, and it's the format most likely to be rejected by older OCR tools that only ever learned JPG and PNG. Accuracy here depends on which kind of WebP you have, and the format has two modes. Lossless WebP behaves like PNG and extracts just as well. Lossy WebP behaves like JPG, discarding edge detail and softening letter boundaries — though at a given file size it generally preserves more detail than JPEG would, so a lossy WebP often extracts slightly better than a JPG of comparable size.

WebP to Text — Frequently Asked Questions

Why do other OCR tools reject WebP?▼

WebP is a comparatively recent format and many tools were built around JPG and PNG only. Since WebP is now what most websites serve, that leaves a real gap — which is why it's supported here.

Does lossy or lossless WebP extract better?▼

Lossless, which behaves like PNG and keeps letter edges intact. Lossy WebP softens those edges, though it still tends to retain more detail than a JPEG of the same file size.

Should I convert WebP to PNG before extracting?▼

No need — WebP is handled directly. Converting a lossy WebP to PNG first can't recover detail that was already discarded, so it wouldn't improve accuracy anyway.
