Translating English to German — What to Expect
German forces two decisions on the translation. It distinguishes formal Sie from informal du, so the output commits to a register — usually Sie, appropriate for business but stiff for casual text. It also assigns one of three grammatical genders to every noun, which determines the articles and adjective endings around it; a wrong gender produces visibly incorrect German. German also tends to run 10–20% longer than English and builds much longer individual words, which can break fixed-width layouts and button labels.

English to German — Frequently Asked Questions
Does it use du or Sie?▼
Typically the formal Sie, which suits business and general written contexts. Casual text addressed to friends would use du and needs manual adjustment.
Are umlauts and ß produced correctly?▼
Yes, ä, ö, ü and ß are generated properly rather than substituted with ae, oe, ue or ss. That matters for correct German orthography.
Why does German text break my layout?▼
German words are longer than their English equivalents and compound nouns can be very long indeed. Translated text commonly overflows fixed-width buttons and columns, so allow extra space when designing for German.
