Translating Japanese to English — What to Expect

Japanese to English is one of the harder directions, for a reason that has nothing to do with vocabulary: Japanese routinely omits the subject of a sentence, while English requires one. The translation therefore has to guess whether a line means "I went", "he went" or "they went", and it will pick one confidently. For manga and dialogue especially, treat pronouns in the output as provisional. Extract one speech bubble at a time rather than a whole page — full pages mix panels that read right-to-left and produce scrambled, misleading translations.

How It Works

1

Upload the image

Drag and drop or click to select any image containing Japanese text — a photo, scan or screenshot.

2

Text is read as Japanese

The AI is told the source is Japanese, so it transcribes the text in its own script before translating.

3

Get English output

The original Japanese and the English translation appear side by side. Copy either one.

Japanese to English — Frequently Asked Questions

Why are pronouns sometimes wrong in the translation?▼

Japanese frequently drops the subject where context makes it obvious, but English sentences need one. The translation infers a subject and can infer the wrong one. This is the most common source of plausible-sounding errors in this direction.

Can it translate manga?▼

Yes, best bubble by bubble. A whole page contains multiple panels read right-to-left, and translating everything at once interleaves dialogue from different panels, which garbles the meaning.

Does it handle vertical Japanese text?▼

Usually, though horizontal text is more reliable. If a vertical capture produces a confused translation, the extraction step likely read the columns in the wrong order — crop single columns and retry.
